Understand the foam inside the assembly.
Open-cell spray foam is a lower-density, softer insulation with an open cell structure. It can provide insulation and air sealing when installed at the thickness required by the selected product.
Open-cell products are generally used for interior insulation. Walls and roofline assemblies need a design that accounts for the building’s use, available cavity depth, and moisture conditions.
Open-cell foam allows more water vapor to pass through than closed-cell foam. Vapor control belongs in the assembly design. Compare the product’s documented R-value and required thickness rather than relying on a general rule.
Bring plans, photos of the exposed framing, and details about existing insulation and planned finishes. Ask which product is proposed and how the full assembly will be completed.
